Articles
FEATURES are timely articles of interest to transportation professionals, including administrators, planners, researchers, and practitioners in government, academia, and industry. Articles are encouraged on innovations and state-of-the-art practices pertaining to transportation research and development in all modes (e.g., highways and bridges, public transit, aviation, rail, marine, and others, such as pipelines, bicycles, and pedestrians) and in all subject areas (e.g., driver behavior, planning and administration, design, materials and construction, facility maintenance, traffic control, safety, security, logistics, geology, law, energy, and technology). Manuscripts should be no longer than 3,000 words. Authors also should provide tables and graphics with corresponding captions (see Submission Requirements). Prospective authors are encouraged to submit a summary or outline of a proposed article for preliminary review. Shorter feature articles are typically 1,500 words in length. These can accompany feature articles as a supporting or related topic or can address a standalone topic.
SIDE TRIP articles follow a feature article. They go into additional detail on topics addressed in the main article or highlight important additional information related to that article. Side Trip articles are usually up to 750 words in length.
POINT OF VIEW is an authored opinion article on current transportation issues and is published occasionally. Articles (1,000 to 2,000 words) may be submitted with appropriate, high-quality graphics, and are subject to review and editing.
RESEARCH PAYS OFF (RPO) highlights research projects, studies, demonstrations, and improved methods or processes that provide innovative, cost-effective solutions to important transportation-related problems in all modes. RPO articles should describe cases in which the application of project findings has resulted in benefits to transportation agencies or to the public, or in which substantial benefits are expected. Articles (approximately 750 to 1,000 words) should delineate the problem, research, and benefits, and be accompanied by one or two photos or graphics. RPO topics must be approved by the RPO Task Force. To submit a topic for consideration, contact Nancy Whiting at 202-334-2956 or [email protected].
